Dancer/Choregrapher Spotlight: Billy Chang

Billy Chang performs on stage as fire during the
preview of Cirque Du Soleil's 'Dralion' in 2009.
Next weekend, Ormao Dance Company will premiere a 12-part piece by international dancer and choreographer Billy Chang.

A native of Taiwan, Chang has traveled and performed all over the globe, most notably as a soloist with the gravity defying Cirque du Soleil, but he's no stranger to Colorado Springs, and has been an active member in our community's dance scene.

Chang first came to Colorado Springs as a guest artist through a program at the Colorado College, and in 2010, choreographed a piece for Ormao Dance Company in celebration of the company's 20th anniverary. When asked about his choreography for Ormao, Chang explained that it was inspired by his experiences in the Springs, saying it "is not just about dancing. It's about the whole atmosphere in Colorado Springs. The people of Colorado Springs. The colors of Colorado Springs."

Since 2010, Change has kept his relationships in Colorado Springs strong; teaching classes at the Colorado College; choreographing new pieces with Ormao Dance Company; and hosting an open-to-the-public dance rehearsal last month.

Watch Chang's choreography in action next weekend when Ormao Dance Company premieres new work at the FAC.
