The Fine Arts Center
Theatre Company’s first second-stage offering, Make Sure It’s Me,
is a workshop production of a new work by Kate Wenner, an award-winning
producer of ABC’s 20/20, in the FAC Music Room, Sept. 13-23. A
talk back will follow each performance. The play is
based on Wenner’s nine months of interviews with Iraq war veterans who
experienced life-changing traumatic brain injuries. Wenner began her
research for the play in Colorado Springs at Fort Carson. Wenner and her play
were recently featured on National Public Radio this past January and in an
opinion piece Wenner wrote for the New York Times in March.
Audience feedback is encouraged. There will be a talkback after every performance.
Kate Wenner and local activist / military wife Amber Nicodemus will be on hand following the performance on Friday, Sept. 14.
Noted Denver theatre critic John Moore will lead the discussion on Sunday, Sept. 16.
The
story is set in a university brain trauma clinic where five vets, injured in
IED explosions in Iraq, confront the truth that their lives will never be the
same again. Jo Fitch, the passionate, tough-minded doctor treating them,
decides to expose the Pentagon’s indifference to the epidemic of brain injuries
that she believes will turn out to be the Agent Orange of the Iraq War.
“Talking with the families of Fort Carson soldiers was a transformative
experience for Wenner, one that spurred the former 20/20 producer to
visit military bases and Veterans Affairs hospitals across the country. (She)
interviewed doctors, veterans, wives and mothers dealing with traumatic brain
injury.” – Colorado Springs Independent
